Why Silicone is the Best Material for Sex Toys

If you’ve browsed your local sex shop or online, you’ve seen sex toys in a variety of materials - plastic, rubber, glass, latex, and even wood. All of these present potential problems when using them. The best material for dildoes and other sex toys is hands down silicone. Silicone’s properties make it optimal for use in the body safely.

What’s wrong with plastic?

The biggest problem with most plastics used for sex toys is that they can contain phthalates. Phthalates are linked to numerous health problems, including lower sperm count, hormonal changes, and injury to developing fetuses and nursing babies.

When you insert plastic into mucous membranes, you make it easier to absorb phthalates and other dangerous chemicals used in producing plastic sex toys.

Another problem is that the seams of plastic sex toys are not smooth and can damage the delicate tissues inside of your body if you are not careful. Plastic is definitely not the best material for dildos and other sex toys. You’re much better off with silicone sex toys.

What’s wrong with rubber, latex, and wood?

You’ve probably seen healthcare workers using nitrile gloves recently instead of latex. Latex and rubber can cause allergic reactions in people, and you do NOT want an allergic reaction that starts in your private parts.

Latex allergies are serious, and there is no sense in taking chances when you want yourself or your partner flush with passion, not histamines.

Rubber’s problem, aside from the chemicals that go into its making, is that it is porous. This material has several implications, none of them pleasant.

One, bacteria can get into the material and stay there, making it a potential health hazard. Two, because it is porous, you can never get rubber/latex completely clean. You can wash it with soap, of course, but you cannot sterilize it like silicone sex toys. Bacteria, once in the toy, will stay there.

If you use rubber sex toys, you must use them with a condom, but the chemicals and potential allergic reactions really make them a no-go.

Wood has the same issues as rubber. Unless it’s properly sealed, its porous nature allows bacteria to live and thrive. No matter how eco-friendly you’d like to be, wood is not the best material for dildos. It may look artistic, but keep your wooden dildos on the shelf to be admired and not used.

Of course, you can use a condom with these materials to help decrease the bacteria, but remember that you will never be able to get them completely sterile. If you use your dildo for anal play or share with another, a porous dildo should not be your first choice. Again, silicone sex toys are the better option.

What’s wrong with glass?

Glass is much better than plastic, rubber, or wood because it is not porous. You can boil it or put it in the dishwasher to sterilize it.

Mostly.

The catch is that cheap glass has the potential to break, especially if dropped and may not stand up to hard play. Also, any thin parts of the glass dildo, such as a ring, are weakest at their attachment point and may break off. And you know how painful a paper cut on your finger is….

Glass is also bad if you like temperature play because it puts too much stress on the material and can cause it to break or shatter.

A well-made dildo of borosilicate glass is the safest choice, but it still has the potential to shatter or break like all glass. There are some exquisite glass dildos, but if you are looking for a sex toy without drawbacks, silicone is genuinely the best material. Put your glass sex toys in your dildo stand next to your wood ones for all to admire.

What makes silicone the best sex toy material?

Silicone has properties that make it optimal for play:

You can choose the firmness

With plastic, rubber, wood, or glass, you are limited to a certain firmness. You’ll never find a rubber dildo that’s hard enough if you like Extra Firm. On the other hand, if you prefer a more soft dildo, you’ll never enjoy glass or plastic. On our site, you can find silicone dildos and sex toys from Super Soft to Classic firmness to Extra Firm.

Silicone is non-porous

Because the best dildo material is non-porous, silicone is ideal. Bacteria won’t get inside, and you can boil it if you need to sterilize it without it degrading or losing its shape (or melting - eww!) to ensure that no bacteria remain on the surface. Before boiling your toy, make sure it’s made of 100% platinum cure silicone. Some manufacturers market their toys as silicone when they are only partially silicone or not silicone at all. Pro tip: if you’re shopping for toys and you find a “silicone” dildo that is suspiciously cheap, it’s likely not silicone at all.

If you’re using your dildo or sex toy just for yourself, cleaning it with sex toy cleaner or soap and water is good, but you should still sterilize it from time to time. Particularly if you are a person prone to yeast infections. If you are sharing your dildo with a partner or using it for anal play, you should sterilize your dildo after each use to be safe. Silicone stands up to repeated sterilization.
